Vivo Y17 Review: Triple Cameras with Big Battery

Vivo Y17 Review: When it involves the budget segment in smartphones, companies like Xiaomi, Realme, and Samsung do rather well. And honestly, within the budget segment, Vivo isn’t the primary choice for tech enthusiasts like us. It’s primarily of two reasons: low-res display and low-end processor. So, today I even have got the new Vivo phone, the Vivo Y17, and yes it’s a low-res display and a low-end processor. But, it does accompany triple cameras and an enormous battery. So, with these two USPs at the helm, do you have to really choose the Vivo Y17 over other phones? Let’s find that call at this Vivo Y17 review.

Design

The first thing you notice on the Y17 is that the design. This dark bluish colour is some things I’m really a lover of, and if you look even closer, you’ll see the textured finish inside. It’s not as prominent because the textures on other phones, but this design has certainly made the phone shine. And speaking of shine, the golden bordering round the camera bulge really makes the planning of this phone stand out from the remainder.

However, Vivo has taken the route of a polycarbonate back which was expected from the Y17, because the costlier sibling, the V15 Pro, doesn’t have a glass body.

Another thing I’m not a lover of is that this feel on the hand. It’s probably thanks to the massive battery it’s inside, but the phone is crude. It feels larger than it’s, and perhaps Vivo could have polished the phone a touch more.

On the proper side of the device lie the three buttons, and that they are placed ergonomically, the facility button is on the centre, and therefore the volume rockers right above it. I did miss the tactility of a metallic frame though, as these plastic buttons feel quite cheap.

On rock bottom, it’s a touch chunk of a chin, as I said before. On rock bottom lies a speaker grill, a headphone jack, and a MicroUSB. Come on Vivo, we are in 2019, maybe its time you add during a Type-C port.

Display

The Y17 has one major compromise for the worth it’s and that’s the display. The display is big with a small notch, but it’s only an HD+ resolution. This yields during a very low pixel density of 268 PPI. And if you’re someone coming from FullHD display, you’ll be disappointed while watching Videos. you’ll feel the shortage of sharpness directly.

But if you’re someone coming from HD display, well, you would possibly not feel that much of a difference, because the colours on this one are good. But again, if you’re paying upwards of $200, you ought to expect a full HD display.

Security

I know I’ve been complaining tons, so here are some positives. The fingerprint is basically fast, and its placement is sweet too. I even have read a couple of comments from users complaining about having to stretch to succeed in it, but I haven’t really had that issue as everything is simply under my fingers’ reach and this phone even received an update that improved the unlocking experience. the opposite security option, Face unlock is fast too just the way you expect a Vivo phone to try to to.

Battery

The dual-engine fast charging the charger of this device offers is great. there’s a 5,000 mAh battery inside this phone, and therefore the charger charges up 60% of the battery in an hour which is awesome! Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus had best when it involves fast charging and therefore the Y17 is not any slouch. And this was necessary because the phone has a 5000 mAh battery.

Vivo doesn’t show screen-on-time on its phones. Nonetheless, I got around one and a half to 2 days of battery life on the phone. On each day once I used the phone nearly 7-8 hours, I ended up with 50% of charge, and that’s why this phone here may be a battery champ and a phone perfect for battery hungry users.

Performance

Now, do note that I said battery hungry, not power-hungry users. And that’s due to the SoC this phone has. there’s a MediaTek P35 chipset inside this phone, along with side 4 GB of RAM. So, how good is that the Helio P35 you ask? Just understand this way: It’s not an honest performer for the worth. It’s comparable some 2 years old chipsets like Exynos 7870 and therefore the Snapdragon 625. It’s not even like Snapdragon 632 found on a way cheaper Redmi 7.

Whenever I receive a fresh set of review smartphone, the primary thing I do is run benchmark tests to ascertain how they fare. and therefore the Y17, even thereupon pricing, scored nearly 88000 on Antutu. Yep, just 88.

And that same thing is seen when playing games. PubG loads up in low graphics setting, and there have been stutters here and there. Asphalt 9 works nicely, but if there’s tons of action happening, it lacks a touch of smoothness. However, Dream League Soccer is unplayable on this phone. The app becomes jittery and therefore the whole slow down. And this is often the rationale why I won’t be recommending this phone to anyone because when you’re paying tons for a phone, you’ll a minimum of expect it to perform well, albeit there has been a compromise within the optics aspect.

Camera

Let’s mention the optics part now. There are triple rear cameras on the rear of the Y17, each, obviously serving a special purpose. there’s a primary, a wide-angle, and a depth sensor inside the gold lining.

While a few of the previous Vivo phones I reviewed had a greenish tint on their photos, the Y17 features a natural tint on its images. Even the temperature is natural within the day time. there’s good saturation, and therefore the details are decent. I might have definitely liked better colours, and dynamic range, though. And like other Vivo phones, this camera also overexposes the shots sometimes.

But once you enable the fisheye lens, you’ll notice images with tons of heat. inspect a number of the shots, the yellowish tint has prevailed such a lot that you simply cannot see true colours. the small print isn’t good either. So, albeit the first camera does a well-enough job, you’ll be disappointed by the wide-angle camera.

The third camera may be a depth sensor. The background is blurred properly, although the exposure is slightly quite what I might have wanted. And it does an honest job identifying the themes too. However, if there’s a strand of hair or fingers needed to be blurred, the phone finds it hard to try to so. And is it just me or are the sides a touch softer?

As for the already dark, well, if you’ve got shaky hands like me, the photographs might begin with a slight blur. the colours are decent, but there are little details, and there’s tons of noise on the photographs . an equivalent goes for the fisheye lens.

Now let’s mention selfies. Vivo is well-known for selfies but Y17 isn’t that great. I mean it’s good, but with most manufacturers that specialize in selfies, I expected better and therefore the skin tone could are better too. there’s also a selfie portrait feature on the phone, but blurring on the sides of my head isn’t that great.

Software

Let me add another feature to something that’s not great. Now, this is often my personal preference as I’m oriented towards stock Android. The UI Vivo has implemented on its phone are some things that I don’t like. the corporate did usher in a couple of updates like this apple-ish centre and everything, but I’m not really an enormous fan of this. Also, if you’re in an app, and you attend recent applications, and you are trying to clear all apps, the app you last used won’t filter out. Weird!

But I do just like the incontrovertible fact that there’s 128 GB of memory which is expandable also. The mono speaker lacks bass, but it’s clear and fairly loud.

Vivo Y17: Pros and Cons

ProsCons
1. Great Battery Life1. Micro USB Port
2. Triple Cameras2. Under-par Performance
3. Fast Charging3. HD Display

Conclusion

When I first got my hands on with the Y17, I knew that its specifications were below par in comparison against the competition. But I wanted to offer this device an opportunity since specs aren’t everything and tons of devices I review do better than their specs on paper.

I really liked the battery of this device, as I nearly ended two days with it. there’s fast charging which is sort of fast. But aside from that, nothing is outstanding about this device.

The display is merely HD, the performance is average, while the competition excels in those areas. Companies like Xiaomi, Samsung and Realme are really excelling within the budget price segment, and although Vivo has tried to compete against them with the Y17’s triple cameras and enormous battery, the phone is overpriced on behalf of me. So, maybe a price-cutting of some Rs. 3-4,000 should lure future buyers.
