Samsung Galaxy M21 Design

Samsung has been making phones within the Galaxy M series out of plastic to stay costs down. The Samsung Galaxy M21 seems like it had been designed with a decent budget in mind. the rear panel is formed out of plastic and features a glossy finish. It picks up fingerprints very easily. Samsung doesn’t provide a case within the box, so you will have to wipe the device often till you purchase one yourself.

The Galaxy M21 is that the successor of the Galaxy M20 (Review) but looks far more just like the Galaxy M30s (Review) which was launched in mid-2019. However, it doesn’t are available equivalent flashy colours and is out there only in Blue and Black.

The Galaxy M21 features a big display that measures 6.4 inches, and has thin bezels at the highest and therefore the sides. The chin is considerably thicker. At the highest, it’s a waterdrop notch that houses the selfie camera and a small earpiece right above it. you’ll reach the highest of the display if you’ve got big hands, else you will need to shuffle a touch to succeed in the highest. However, this phone isn’t as big because the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, which we recently reviewed.

We also had a problem reaching the quantity buttons as they’re positioned a touch too high for our liking. the facility button and therefore the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner are well placed though and are easy to succeed in when using the device single-handed. The Galaxy M21 measures 8.9mm in thickness which is especially right down to the large battery that it packs in. Surprisingly, the device doesn’t feel too bulky within the hand because the sides are curved. It also tips the size at 188g, which is far lighter than the Redmi Note 9 Pro (Review) which felt bulky.

Samsung offers a USB Type-C port at rock bottom and a 15W charger within the box. The Galaxy M21 also features a 3.5mm headphone jack at rock bottom alongside the loudspeaker and therefore the primary microphone.

Samsung Galaxy M21 specifications and software

Taking a glance at the spec sheets of both the Samsung Galaxy M21 and therefore the Galaxy M30s, we struggled to seek out the differences between these two devices. The newer Galaxy M21 gets a 20-megapixel selfie shooter which may be a higher resolution compared to the 16-megapixel sensor on the Samsung Galaxy M30s. The Galaxy M21 also gets One UI 2.0 running on top of Android 10, while the Galaxy M30s was running One UI 1.5 on top of Android 9 Pie at the time of our review. Currently, the Galaxy M21 is cheaper by Rs. 3,660 compared to the Galaxy M30s

The Galaxy M21 features a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a Full-HD+ resolution. An AMOLED panel during this price range is not common but Samsung has been steadily changing that with the Galaxy M series. This panel is vivid and has excellent viewing angles. It also gets bright enough outdoors to be visible under sunlight.

Samsung has chosen the Exynos 9611 SoC once more. It now powers the Galaxy M21, a bit like the Galaxy M31 and therefore the Galaxy M30s. this is often an octa-core processor with four performance ARM Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.3GHz and 4 efficiency Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7GHz. It also features integrated Mali-G72 graphics. The Galaxy M21 is obtainable in two variants, one with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and therefore the other with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. We had the bottom variant for this review, which is priced at Rs. 12,699 on Amazon but are going to be available for Rs. 13,199 offline and on Samsung’s website. Similarly, the top-end model is priced at Rs. 14,999 on Amazon and Rs. 15,499 elsewhere.

The Galaxy M21 may be a dual-SIM device and has two Nano-SIM slots. It also features a dedicated microSD card slot for storage expansion. there’s support for dual 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5, dual-band Wi-Fi, and 4 satellite navigation systems. It packs during a 6,000mAh battery.

The Galaxy M21 runs One UI 2.0 on top of Android 10 which is that the latest version of Android. it had been still running the February security patch, which is now dated, at the time of this review. The UI is analogous thereto of the Galaxy M31 which we reviewed earlier this year. With the Galaxy M21, you’ll get to take care while fixing the device, or Samsung will send you marketing notifications. The setup process also suggests installing a couple of other apps, which we skipped.

We found some bloatware preinstalled on the device, including Amazon Shopping, Netflix, Prime Video, Helo, and Dailyhunt. we’ve seen within the past that Helo and Dailyhunt are capable of generating spammy notifications, so we might recommend that you simply uninstall them if you do not use them. We also found the stock My Galaxy app pushing notifications throughout the day.

This phone gets an Always-on display mode, and Dolby Atmos is out there for earphones and Bluetooth headsets. you furthermore may have the choice to modify to gesture-based navigation rather than the normal three-button layout. Other Android 10 goodies include a Dark Mode, which takes full advantage of the Super AMOLED panel on the Galaxy M21. Samsung has also added a Game Booster feature which will block notifications and provides quick shortcuts for apps of your choice.

Samsung Galaxy M21 performance

The Exynos 9611 may be a capable processor and may look out of basic apps with none signs of slowing down. However, we did notice that heavy apps took a while to load. Multitasking was smooth and that we could switch between multiple apps without having to attend for them to load everywhere again.

The fingerprint scanner at the rear of the device is quick to unlock the device, then is face recognition. The AMOLED display is that the better part of the Galaxy M21 and that we enjoyed watching videos on this smartphone. We found the speaker to be tinny, which dampened the general experience slightly.

We ran benchmarks on the Galaxy M21 to ascertain how it stacks up against a number of its competition. The smartphone managed to attain 1,77,661 in AnTuTu which is less than the 191,981 clocked by the Galaxy M31. this might be right down to the difference in RAM between the 2 devices we tested. However, both these scores are far behind those of other phones during this price segment, like the Realme 6 (Review) and therefore the Redmi Note 9 Pro which scored 290,210 and 279,978 respectively once we reviewed them.

The Galaxy M21 scored 347 and 1,320 in Geekbench’s single-core and multi-core tests respectively. We also saw 43 fps and 9.3 fps in GFXBench’s T-Rex and Car Chase respectively. In 3DMark Slingshot, the Galaxy M21 scored 2,097 points which is less than what a number of its competitors achieved.

We played PUBG Mobile on the Galaxy M21 to ascertain how the phone handles it. the sport defaulted to the High settings with graphics set to HD and therefore the frame rate set to High. We did notice some occasional stutter in gameplay which prompted us to drop the graphics quality. After playing the sport for quarter-hour we noticed that the device was slightly considered the touch, and registered a 3 per cent battery drop.

Battery life for the Galaxy M21 was excellent. because of the large 6,000mAh battery, the phone lasted us for on the brink of two full days of normal use. In our HD video loop test, the device managed to last for 21 hours and 48 minutes, but Samsung phones do automatically reduce brightness once the battery falls below a particular level. Also, the large battery takes over two hours to refill. Using the supplied 15W charger, the device needs to 21 per cent in half-hour and need to 42 per cent in an hour.

Samsung Galaxy M21 cameras

Samsung has gone with a triple camera setup on the Samsung Galaxy M21, and it’s just like what you get with the Galaxy M30s. the first camera features a 48-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture. There’s also an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The camera UI is straightforward to use. it’s a scene optimiser which will detect what the camera is pointed towards and set the phone up accordingly. aside from the regular photo and video modes, it’s a Live Focus, Pro, Night, Food, Super Slow-Mo and a couple of more.

The Samsung Galaxy M21 is quick to lock focus and meter light, but the scene optimiser isn’t as responsive. In photo mode, the Galaxy M21 saves 12-megapixel shots by default. In daylight, we found the camera performance to be good, and therefore the Galaxy M21 managed to capture good details, and text at a distance was legible. However, we might have liked a touch more sharpness within the output.

The wide-angle camera features a lower resolution which is clear in photos. It doesn’t manage details also because of the primary shooter. It does offer a wider field of view but there’s visible distortion.

For close-ups, the phone managed to make a natural depth effect between the topic and therefore the background in our tests. the topic was focused and sharp. With the scene optimiser enabled, the phone bumps up the contrast.

When shooting portraits using the Live Focus mode, the Samsung Galaxy M21 allows you to select the extent of blur within the output. It detects edges well and therefore, therefore, the software also allows you to vary the extent of blur and the effect after attempting.

Low-light camera performance isn’t nearly as good as what we’ve seen from a number of the opposite phones during this price range that we have tested. The Galaxy M21 managed to stay noise in check but there was a watercolour-like effect within the output. Quality drops further if you employ the wide-angle camera in low light. The Night mode on the Galaxy M21 manages to supply slightly better output, but the phone crops the frame slightly to minimise shakes.

Selfies taken in daylight had good detail, but beautification is enabled by default. The camera UI offers you a cropped view by default but you get a toggle for a wider frame. The selfie camera delivers 12-megapixel photos by default, but you’ll take a photograph at the complete 20-megapixel resolution if you modify the ratio. In low light, selfies had no noise but the grain was visible on zooming in.

Video recording maxes out at 4K for the first camera but there’s features a 10-minute limit for clips, which feels restrictive. The selfie camera is capped at 1080p. Video recorded in daylight had a shimmer effect which could make your footage unusable. there’s an ultra-stable mode which delivers better stabilisation. there’s no stabilisation at 4K. The shimmer effect was even worse in low light, and therefore the ultra-stable mode did cause a drop by the video quality.

Samsung Galaxy M21 Price In Nepal & Availability

The Samsung Galaxy M21 price in Nepal starts from Rs. 22,999 for a 4/64GB memory variant. The 6/128GB version of the M21 is priced at Rs. 27,499. It goes for sale starting the second week of June.

Model Name Price in Nepal Availability
Samsung Galaxy M21 (4/64GB) NPR. 22,999 June 2020
Samsung Galaxy M21 (6/128GB) NPR. 27,499 June 2020

The Samsung Galaxy M21 feels tons just like the Samsung Galaxy M30s (Review). It shares tons of key specifications with the older device. The differentiators are Android 10 and a better resolution selfie shooter, but since the Galaxy M30s recently got an update to at least one UI 2.0, the selfie camera is just about the sole differentiator. Surprisingly, Samsung has priced the Galaxy M21 less than the Samsung Galaxy M30s which remains on sale. The lower cost and therefore the better chance of getting updated to Android 11 at some point tip the scales within the Galaxy M21’s favour.

However, the Samsung Galaxy M21 itself is simply a mean device at this price point. Competitors like the Realme 6 (Review) and therefore the Redmi Note 9 Pro (Review) offer far more impressive performance and better cameras at roughly an equivalent price.

The other highlight of the device is going to be its 6,000mAh battery which comes with support for 15W fast charging technology. Recently launched M31 came with the same-sized battery size and fast charging support. – Samsung Galaxy M21 launched in Nepal

The device will ship with Samsung’s One UI 2.0 on top of Android 10. For security, there’s a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and face unlock feature. It comes with an accelerometer, gyro sensor, geometric sensor, proximity sensor but misses out on ambient light sensor.
