OPPO A9 2020 Review: Remember the Oppo A7 we reviewed last year, which is not on par with the competition it is one of the worst value for money smartphones of 2020. Now, they have released its successor, the A9 2020.
It was clear that Oppo wanted to make their A series a success, so they enhanced their game with this phone with a better camera and an upgrade in overall performance. But competition in the mid-range segment is insane, so does the A9 2020 fit its billing? In this OPPO A9 2020 review, we tried to explain it.

Now, I have been using the Oppo A9 2020 as my daily tool for the past few weeks, and the one I have is Sea Glass. Bright, bright and full of gradient colours. Let me explain it best. Depending on your viewing angle you will be able to see different reflective patterns on it. Overall, I’m very happy with its design, because its glass has returned to me, making me feel like I have a really expensive premium phone.
One minor complaint I have is that the glass end attracts smudges. You feel the need to wipe the back, as fingerprints on the back of your device are very common. The good thing, though, is that you get a clear case with the device. However, if you plan to under-use the device, I can say that it is good luck! – OPPO A9 2020 Review
On the back, you’ll also find a quad-camera setup (48MP + 8MP + 2MP + 2MP), 3 cameras pending on the Fingerprint scanner, and the other with an LED flash next to the camera range. Button placement in the A9 2020 is pretty standard. There is a power button on the right and a volume button on the left. On top of the volume button, there is a tray for dual nano-SIMs and dedicated microSD cards.
At the front, there is a 6.5-inch IPS LCD screen with a small water dot on top. Notch also has a 16MP selfie shooter. There is also a call speaker at the top. However, the notifications do not have an LED light. It would be great to keep track of battery charge status and notifications.
Loudspeaker, USB Type-C port, microphone and 3.MM headphone jack. All these are placed on the lower edge and the upper edge is completely free of anything. Now, I have no complaints about others, but the headphone jack’s position shocked me. I may be the one at the top.
However, this is a small complaint from me and others may not be the same. Well, everything is for their good, right? – OPPO A9 2020 review
The Oppo A9 2020 has a 6.5-inch HD + IPS screen. It gets the safety courtesy of Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Thin bezels surround the device screen. While watching YouTube videos in landscape mode I saw a thick chin but now it is aesthetically pleasing to the device. – OPPO A9 2020 Review
One of the biggest drawbacks of this device is the 720p resolution provided by the device. I mean it costs more than 35K and what we’re left with is a low-resolution screen that doesn’t do justice to its price. Don’t get me wrong, its performance is good because you get good colour and can notice the sharp details, however, the cost you pay for this device is very high.
I’m already complaining about the Mi A3, which offers 720p resolution. But at least it has an AMOLED panel. In comparison, this phone does not even have an OLED panel. I would like to have a sub-resolution 20K smartphone. If you want to go beyond the 35k mark, at least add it to the FHD display, or still in the OLED panel! An expensive smartphone with average performance is just a huge bummer. – OPPO A9 2020 Review
Software and UI
For the UI, the Oppo A9 uses Android 9 with Color OS 6.0.1. Although I am not a big fan of the Color OS, I have found the UI to be better at switching from icons to realm phones.
Also, with Color OS, you won’t get any damage while using it. Switching between apps is also not a problem as everything is very clear. I think the sensitivity is perfect with its RAM which is a big part of 8 GB.
I find the UI very customizable. You can choose whether you want an app drawer or a screen layout and you can even customize your navigation buttons the way you want them to. Besides, you get features like smart driving and smart assistant, which are useful in smartphones these days.
Now, the device is pre-installed with most apps, however, you can easily uninstall them if you want.
I was really into it when this device was launched, and on their show, they presented it as a smartphone in which you can play games easily without any interruptions. Now, 8GB of RAM completes that statement, and you can easily play games like Mobile Legends, PBG and Call of Duty on this device with that minimum frame rate. However, I don’t think you get along well with it.
For God’s sake, it’s powered by the Snapdragon 665 SoC. This isn’t a good chipset, but again it doesn’t match the price range of the device. They can easily choose the Snapdragon 675 SoC which promises better performance. But no, even here they are compromised. – OPPO A9 2020 Review
This is followed by the display’s leering problem again. When playing PUBG you cannot go above the balanced graphics settings with the minimum frame rate on this device. The gameplay is also smooth when playing in the settings where the device supports the maximum supported device. So, if you play the game in the lowest settings possible, I have nothing to say.
However, the plus point is the sound quality. Thanks to Dolby Atmos support, the device produces clear and loud enough sound that it has good depth. But then again, you will find that its bass support is not that great. Good thing they included a headphone jack. – OPPO A9 2020 Review
Another aspect of the company’s focus on the device is its camera. Rear quad-cam with 48MP primary sensor. WhatsApp with Front Camera, New Night Mode and Improved AI Algorithms. From the outside, I thought this was okay, so the cameras on it were awesome.
At the rear, the device has a quad-camera setup. It includes a 48MP primary lens, 8MP ultra-wide, 2MP monochrome lens and 2MP depth sensor. In truth, shooting from the rear camera is a hit or miss situation. – OPPO A9 2020 Review
Now, taking the right photos every time is a difficult task with the A9 2020 camera. To get the best results you need to shoot under good light and maintain focus. The photos you have completely captured show the exact colour and you will see that it is very sharp. The rest of the time, though, you’ll get nice looking photos at the surface level, but these are all grainy and don’t have enough detail as you zoom in.
Even taking a picture in low light isn’t so good with its camera. I could see my photos turned into a grain. However, this is a night time feature that you can use when taking night time photos. You can see a significant difference in quality between your regular low-light photos and those captured using Night Mode. – OPPO A9 2020 Review
This is a very good thing about its rear camera in night mode. You can see a clear difference in the quality of images captured with and without Night Mode.
I’m not impressed with the pictures. Oppo also has several filter options for portrait mode. Seven are perfect! What is the use of this filter if it does not do what the portrait camera does.
I mean you will encounter many situations where you ask for more blur effect on the background as the bokeh is likely to lose the background parts. Here, too, you should be sure to take a good portrait picture. – OPPO A9 2020 Review
Moving on to the front camera, the Oppo A9 2020 has a 16MP selfie shooter that puts Natch at the forefront.
And I’d like to say, the four-fold rear camera instead. The photos come in very well because you can see the fine details and very good colours in your selfie. It does a lot of AI work in the background and doesn’t give your selfie a natural look, but the quality is enough to upload it on Facebook or Instagram. Low light selfies are a little grainy, however, they are very good.
On more than one occasion, I use the front camera more than my quad-rear camera. It is very good at creating sharp images and you will find that the pictures pack enough detail. And under proper lightning, it can produce a selfie that is hard to beat. – OPPO A9 2020 Review
When it comes to video recording, the device can capture 4K video. Now, one good thing about recording video is that you can switch from casual to Ultraframe in the video. Besides, there is an additional Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS). It works when making a video on the go. However, it also has a drawback as it lacks focus.
Battery and Security
Part of the compromise with this device is probably its battery. Simply put, this device is a power-bank, a massive capacity of 5000 mAh. With a full charge, the device easily gives you a day and a half of battery life. Depends on usage! This is why its battery life is so big. No, not only the battery size but the low-race HD + display also plays its part. – OPPO A9 2020 Review
In terms of security, the device contains standard passcodes and biometrics. Biometrics are very effective. The fingerprint scanner and face unlocked at the rear are very fast. However, I have found that fingerprint is much faster than face-unlock. The face-unlock of the A9 2020 works well even in low light conditions.
Another security feature available in the A9 2020 is the privacy passcode. It can be used for in-app encryption and is further complied with by security email or your contract ID. The manufacturer claims that its encryption occurs at the chip level and is protected from brute-force attacks. Your device may not be so personal. What I mean is that a friend, family member or colleague may have access to your device only once. And there may be some files or applications that you want to be private. This is where this feature works. You can enable app encryption, choose a hidden app icon (accessible from the dialer if needed), or keep your device private. Now that’s obvious, isn’t it? – OPPO A9 2020 Review
OPPO A9 2020 Price in Nepal & Availability
NPR is the new price of Oppo A92020 in Nepal. 33,590 (formerly Rs. 35,990) for the 8/128 GB variant. The device is available through both online and offline channels and you can get a discount on the market price depending on the retailer.
|Model Name||Old Price||New Price in Nepal|
|Oppo A9 2020 (8/128GB)||NPR. 35,990||NPR. 33,590|
The Oppo A9 2020 is similar to the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Vivo S1 Pro. If you’re after display, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is the way to go, but if you care about the phone’s aesthetics, the Vivo S1 Pro with Super Amoled Display and Under-Display Fingerprint is a good choice. However, if you choose any of the next two, you will lose the Oppo A9’s 5,000mAh battery.
Oppo A9 2020 Pros and Cons
- Great battery life
- Good stereo speakers
- Good cameras
- Pricey for the specs
- HD+ display
- No fast charging
So, my conclusion about the Oppo A9 is that, depending on the price range, Oppo should offer more. My competitors are the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the RealMe XT and the Vivo S1, which are close to the same price range, offering much more in terms of display and camera.
I add to this that this range of Oppo is seriously weak. What’s more, Oppo is launching K-Series and Reno-series phones in China and they are worth the money. Good resolution and very powerful processor. – OPPO A9 2020 Review
To like the comparisons, we’d better take the K series. For much cheaper than the A9 2020, they offer AMOLED panels with full HD + displays. For example, don’t forget the advanced K3 offers in the K series. So, in my opinion, it would be nice if the company was more focused on availability and improvement in other series than the A series that didn’t meet expectations. If they want to advance the A-Series at all costs, they need serious improvement because they can’t afford to go for such low performance, and I think it’s too expensive… – OPPO A9 2020 Review
So, overall, even though the Oppo A9 2020 has some excellent specs, the actual performance is unmatched and its price is very high because you can get a good device in the same price range. So, if it’s on me, I’ll probably go for the Redmi K20 or the Galaxy M30 instead of the Oppo A9 2020.
